Abstract
There have been several reports of successful thyroid graft, both autogenous and homologous.
There were homologous transplants done by vascular anastomosis between the vascular pedicle of
the donor thyroid gland and the inguinal vessels of the host.
In each case, the host was an adult with hypoparathyroidism and the donor was a fresh newb
orn cadaver.
In our case, the host was a familial hypothyroidism with goiter being intractable myxedema to
desiccate thyroid and the donor was a patient with Graves¢¥ disease. The donor was a recurrent
hyperthyroidism six months after having treatment with 7mCu of I^(131).
The superior thyroid vessels of the both donor and host were big enough to anastomose by using
Nakayama small vessel anastomosis set. About 3 grams of thyroid including left thyroid vessels were
transplanted to the superior thyroid vessels of the host.
Postoperative follow-up study was carried out by doing check basal metabolic rate, thyroid scan
ning, body weight and serum cholesterol. The patient is getting well without taking desicate thy
roid over 15 months after grafting.
